I wonder about the naming of fancy places sometimes. Gramercy TAVERN, Union Square CAFE, and they’re all fancy and exclusive AF. What’s going on here? Anywhere else in the country and it would be a dive. Anyway idk why I’m worrying about nomenclature. Also my dad is right, that Giuliani bar is 🔥
That's such a good point about the names! I think about this a lot when it comes to "Radio Shack", mostly because it was my mother's favorite store to go to whenever she had a tech question that I didn't have time to answer. I wonder if Radio Shack would still be around if they had named themselves Radio Castle or Radio Kingdom or something, because the implication of "shack" is lowbrow. But somehow Danny Meyer managed to get around that and rebrand taverns and cafes as fancy stuff 🧐
While I don’t have an in, because when I lived in Sunnyside for 2 years I lived outside of the park zone, I have been inside the park twice when it was open to the public, twice for Oktoberfest and once for a kiddie version of Richard III (not an appropriate kiddie play???) and l feel like… it didn’t live up to my expectations
I think stuff like this just gets hyped *because* of the exclusivity and not for any actual reasons. Like Gramercy Park looks cute and fine, but there isn’t anything groundbreaking within its gates (AFAIK). Its exclusivity is probably the most interesting thing about it.
I love your intention for your Notes! Thanks for sharing a little window into your everyday.

White Castle popped into my head as the equal and opposite version of the phenomenon
Words apparently mean nothing!
Those burgers ARE too small! Potato chips are not actually food.
You would get along really well with my brother and boyfriend when it comes to food ideology.
It’d be fun to do a story comparing/contrasting Sunnyside Gardens and Grammarcy Park. I’ve got an in on the former…
I have zero ins whatsoever so you’re already way ahead of me haha. Happy to tag along if you’re planning a field trip 👀
