I know I said I’d be back to regular posting after my vacation, but that Italian stomach flu is hitting me hard. I’m trying to use all of my downtime to rest so I simply haven’t had the brain power to put actual thoughts together for the newsletter this week. Sorry not sorry! I have been bookmarking lots of cool stuff happening around the city though, so this week you’ll get a big section of events to hold you over until my brain starts working again.
Also, big shoutout to my newest paid subscribers - and Kailyn! You, too, can become a paid subscriber if you want to and get access to my brain whenever you want it. I know I said it’s not fully functioning right now, but I was able to get my favorite wonton soup from 100% Mr. Lin last night so here’s hoping I’m back up and running again soon 🤞
Have you ever lost something in the city? The good-ish news is that you might be able to get it back! The City released a super detailed Lost and Found article that’ll tell you exactly who to contact depending on where you lost your item. If you lost an item in the trash, they’ll actually suit you up and let you dig through garbage! I once lost my wallet on the street near Penn Station and someone actually called me and returned it to me. I also lost an earring on the streets on Bensonhurst at the beginning of one winter and managed to find it later that season when the snow had melted, so anything is possible.
Very cool article about passive housing in East Harlem! Passive houses are insulated incredibly well and are thus very energy efficient and affordable for their occupants. I didn’t know we had buildings in NYC like this and it’s especially great that this type of energy efficient housing is being prioritized for low income/formerly unhoused folks.
This year’s NYBG Halloween trail theme is Nightmare Before Christmas! From September 27 to November 30 the garden will host an outdoor light trail inspired by the movie. You can buy your tickets for the trail now - they’ll run you between $39-55 and are for this exhibit only; you’ll need to purchase an additional ticket if you want to visit the rest of the NYBG.
Speaking of NYBG - they have some big ass lily pads! Apparently each year a bunch of botanical gardens have a competition to see whose lily pads can hold the most weight and y’all, this is just delightful. Peep the video to see the big ass lily pad!
Farm to People in Bushwick is having a Produce Party on Sep 4 to celebrate the release of their first zine! The theme is tomatoes because who doesn’t love a good summer tomato? It’s free to attend and there will be tomato themed bites and bevvies from the @farmtopeople team. There will be tomato merch from @wearyoursnacks, florals from @journalingclasses and MORE.
Is there anything better than bagels and banana pudding? Maybe bagels and banana pudding?? NYC fave Ess a Bagel is bringing back their Magnolia banana pudding collab! Starting September 1 you can get the limited-edition Banana Pudding Cream Cheese Sandwich—a plain bagel filled with Banana Pudding Cream Cheese and rolled in a crushed Nilla wafer coating. It’ll be available at Ess-a-Bagel locations on 32nd Street, 3rd Ave, and 1st Ave, or shipped via Goldbelly.
One of my fave Instagram baddies, @sustainablesabs, will be walking in a show during NYFW! The Walk Your Values: NYFW Runway Show + Exclusive Happy Hour is on September 10 and it’ll highlight sustainable fashion, secondhand looks, and upcycled designers. Tickets are a super affordable $18 and I’ve already got mine so hopefully I’ll see ya there 😉
Kettl’s Greenpoint cafe is turning 3 and they’re celebrating by running one of their only sales of the year, offering 15% off everything in the store—from pinnacle grade loose leaf tea to one of a kind functional ceramics. In addition to the sale, they’ll be offering some celebratory treats including a 2-day only soft serve flavor to commemorate our anniversary. Stop by on Saturday, September 7th and Sunday, September 8th for the goods.
Fotografiska will be leaving it’s current space at the end of the month! Unlike The Rubin though, this museum is just relocating into a bigger building, so you’ll still be able to see your favorite photo exhibits in person.
This Saturday Aug 31 there will be an Asian + Vegan ice cream popup in the wasteland that is East Williamsburg! @pyperbleucollective is hosting @verycoolicecream and they’ll be serving scoops and ice cream sandos from 1-5pm. You know I’ve got my eye on that matcha pandan ice cream sando 😍
Land to Sea is hosting Mah Jong Open Play sessions every Friday in September. Tickets are $5 at the door and a 1 drink minimum is required while you’re there.
Studio 45 in Bushwick is hosting a Cheese Club on Sep 19! They’ll be offering food, wine, and cheese pairings in a dinner party setting in their super cute space. The best part is they offer tickets on a sliding scale from $50-60.
Learn how to paint Prospect Park in watercolor on Sep 8! Tickets are $75 and include all supplies and instruction by artist Gavin Snider.
Remember last week when I said that
is one of my favorite newsletters? Well I’ve got 3 free 1 month subscriptions available that I can send out to you! So if you’ve been wanting to check out Rob’s newsletter, drop me a comment with your email address and I’ll send you a free sub 🙃
Sorry to hear you're still feeling it. A seriously impressive roundup of NYC events for someone under the weather! Also, respect that you kept a link's distance between the vegan ice cream pop-up and Cheese Club.
Thanks again for the shoutout!
Your brain not working is better than 95% of our fully functioning brains. Feel better!!!!
