Another week, another newsletter….except not quite. I definitely underestimated how long it would take me to settle into my new job routine and I just did not have time to do enough research for a whole newsletter this week. My new job is great (they’ve allowed me to order a laminator and I’ve already got some memes up around the office), but I’ve been going to bed at like 9pm each night, which leaves me very little time for writing 😅
That said - I collect links to events all week long, so I want to send off a shorty post with some upcoming happenings in case you, unlike me, are able to stay awake long enough to do things. Thanks for your patience while I figure out my new schedule. I’m hoping to be back next week with a writeup on some things in Gramercy 👀
I also want to give a shoutout to one of my newsletter pals ; she shared some great resources for helping folks in LA experiencing hardship due to the wildfires. Please check out her latest issue for those links:
Apparently Wikipedia is turning 24?? Does anyone reading this remember having to look stuff up in encyclopedias in the before times? RIP Encarta Encyclopedia, you were always there for me. Anyways, Wikipedia is having a birthday party at one of the best library branches in the city on Jan 25. Arrive early for the workshops, because the first 100 people to show up will also receive tickets to their exclusive afterparty.
Nitehawk is having a super secret Anime After Dark double feature screening on Jan 22. Based on the hint they gave, I have a feeling it’s gonna be Dragonball Z themed.
I’m not much of a Broadway girly, but if you are then you should check out NYC Broadway Week! From jan 21-Feb 9, you can purchase 2 for 1 tickets to a bunch of shows with code BWAYWK25. If there are any shows you think I absolutely should see, let me know!
I absolutely love my haircutter and the entire vibe of the salon she works at (she also writes
which is a must for all you soup sluts). Queen of Swords recently opened a second location in Ridgewood and they’re having a grand opening party with lots of funsies and giveaways. Jan 25 - be there!Calling all clothing swappers - head to Maison Jar in Greenpoint on Jan 25 to get some new duds. Please make sure to bring items in good, wearable condition.
If you’ve got clothes that aren’t in the best shape, but you’re skilled at mending, consider lending your mending skills to Bushwick Ayuda Mutua. They’re working on scheduling a Repair Fest in March and would love your help.
I still haven’t been able to bring myself to visit the 9/11 museum, but it’s something I’d like to see eventually. Good news is that it’s now free to all New Yorkers the first Sunday of each month starting Feb 2. I think it should be free to NYers always….
Finally, the New York Historical Society will be giving Flaco the Owl his own exhibit starting Feb 9! Flaco is a NY icon and I can’t wait to be able to learn more about his journey from the Central Park Zoo to the rooftops around the city.
If this week’s issue left you feeling shorted, then let me share some of my favorite recent reads to help you bridge the gap until I get my shit together. These are some of my favorite authors on Substack and I hope you like them too!
Ah I'm so honored to be featured here! BCLF is my absolute fave. 😍
Also I meant to comment this like 3 months ago, but I went to Central Park to see the Egyptian obelisk after reading your post about it. And while I was standing next to the obelisk, reading your post out loud to my husband to give him the obelisk history, this group of people with hats, vests, messenger bags, and whips shows up. And yes, they were an Indiana Jones fan club and they dress up like Indiana Jones and crack their huge whips next to sweet prehistoric stuff around the city. 🤠
Eden! Thanks so much for the feature. Appreciate you!
